High School Esports: A Parent’s Guide to Competitive Gaming

Dec 20 2024

Esports teams are part of life at highschools and universities across the country, and for good reason. Competitive video gaming offers students a chance to develop teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking skills all while having fun and competing at a high level.

At Friends’ Central School, the esports team has carved out a unique space for students to grow and succeed. Duncan, a senior and team captain, shared, “We want new people who have never played the game before to join and learn. It’s about creating opportunities for everyone, whether they’re experienced or just starting out.”

Why Esports Belong in High Schools

Esports, like any sport, require dedication, collaboration, and skill. The team provides a space for a range of students – those who play conventional sports and those who don't – to connect and thrive. For parents wondering, esports encourage:

  • Teamwork: Players collaborate, analyze challenges, and work together to succeed.
  • Leadership: Captains and team members take on responsibilities that help their team improve and achieve.
  • Time Management: Balancing practice, competitions, and academics teaches valuable organizational skills.
  • Sportsmanship: Players learn how to win and lose gracefully while respecting opponents.

“Being on the team has taught me how to handle pressure and lead by example. Whether it’s a tough game or a busy week at school, I’ve learned how to stay calm and focused,” explained Duncan.

Esports can also help students build connections that extend beyond high school. The National Association of Collegiate Esports reports that over 260 colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada compete in Varsity esports programs, offering opportunities for students to join teams, compete for championships, and find a community of like-minded peers.

Tackling Misconceptions About Esports

Esports often face outdated stereotypes. Some parents worry that gaming could lead to a lack of physical activity or prevent participation in athletics, but that isn’t the case. At Friends’ Central, Duncan points out “Almost everyone on our team has also played JV or Varsity sports.”

The skills developed in esports, like strategic thinking, quick decision-making, and teamwork, often complement traditional athletics.

Another common concern is that gaming might lead to addiction or excessive screen time. However, being part of an organized esports team promotes a healthy and structured approach to gaming. Practices are scheduled, competitions are supervised, and academics remain a priority. Students learn discipline and time management while enjoying a hobby they’re passionate about – all within a supportive team environment.

How to Support Your Child’s Interest in Esports

If your child wants to join the esports team at their school, here’s how you can encourage their interest:

  1. Start a Conversation: Ask your child about their favorite games and what excites them about esports. Showing genuine interest can open the door to a deeper understanding of their goals and interests.
  2. Learn the Basics: Even if you’ve never gamed before, take time to explore the games your child plays. Watching a tournament or playing a round with them can be a fun way to connect and better understand the esports world.
  3. Encourage Healthy Habits: Help your child strike a balance between gaming, academics, physical activity, and social life. Setting clear boundaries for screen time can foster discipline.
  4. Support Their Goals: Whether they aim to play casually or aspire to compete at a higher level, celebrate your child’s progress. Acknowledge achievements like making the team, improving their rank, or learning new strategies.

Esports: A Gateway to the Future

Esports is more than just a high school activity—it’s a stepping stone to exciting opportunities in higher education and beyond. With over $16 million in scholarships available nationwide, competitive gaming can open doors for students to pursue their passions in college.

For Friends’ Central’s esports team, this connection to the future is already taking shape. Duncan shared how the team has celebrated significant milestones, including top finishes in competitions and an in-person tournament at Harrisburg University where they played alongside college-level teams and got a glimpse of esports at the next level.

Joining an esports team is about more than just playing games- it’s about growth, connection, and preparing for exciting possibilities ahead.
